Should Elian Gonzalez Go Back To Cuba Or Stay In The United States? :: essays research papers

Should Elian Gonzalez go back to Cuba or stay in the United States? This seems to be the interrogative drenching the media on a constant bases. Every newspaper, news broadcast, and magazine seem to have a story about Elian. Titles like Elians Grandmothers atomic number 18 coming to the US, seems kind of silly if you read the headline literally. I dont mean to be cold but why do we care if Elians grandmother is coming to the US? Thousands of grandmas have come to the US everyday, but we dont hear about them. The media has turned this dilemma into a circus. All that aside, the question and heated debate of whether or not Elian should stay still plagues us. Everyone seems to have an opinion on this subject. If you ask people nonchalantly what they think should happen, you will get very definite answers and plenty of information to back up there opinions. I have asked many colleagues and friends this question. I myself do not have the answer and do not think I am the one to judge. I have spoken to Cubans friends who say the conditions are so terrible over there that there is no way the boy should go back. They speak of old, decrepit, tiny homes with way to many people living in a single dwelling. They speak of a place that has little food and no milk for their children. I have been told of the conditions in the schools and their lack of proper facilities. These acquantenses tell apart me that Castro his controlling the boys father, monitoring his phone calls and making sure he tells everyone that he wants his boy to come home. They say he is not adequate to say what he really wants for fear of himself and family. For fear that Castro will take away the familys food and shelter in Cuba. Over all, the general motion picture that has been painted is not pretty. The only thing not in debate is the fact that children their live a very different life from the majority of the children in the United States. On the other hand, there are the people that believe the chi ld should be with his natural father. That where the child lives does not matter, what matters is whom the child is with. They say he has missed his mother and should not be taken away from his father.

Is Human Cloning the Answer? :: Argumentative Persuasive Topics

Is Human Cloning the Answer? That depends upon the question. Recently there was a major breakthrough in the scientific research - the interpret of all DNA in a human gene is complete. Couple of years ago, this seems an impossible task for scientist to triumph over. All this revolution in acquisition leads us to believe that the day, when the human being will be cloned, is not far away. Human cloning has always been an issue of controversy, be it in ground of ethically or religiously. Taking a look at why cloning might be beneficial, among many cases, it is arguable that parents who are known to be at risk of passing a genetic defect to a child could make use of cloning. A fertilized ovum could be cloned, and the duplicate tried for the disease or disorder. If the clone was free of genetic defects, then the other clone would be as well. The latter could be implanted in the charwoman and allowed to mature to term. Moreover, cloning would enable infertile couples to have children of their own rather than using sperm of another man. Cloning humans would also mean that organs could be cloned, so it would be a source of perfect transplant organs. This, surely would be immensely beneficial to millions of unfortunate people around the earthly concern that are expected to lose their lives due to failure of single (or more) organ(s). It is also arguable that a ban on cloning may be unconstitutional and would deprive people of the right to reproduce and restrict the freedom of scientists. Arguments against cloning are also on a perfectly viable side. Primarily, I believe that cloning would intervene with the normal cycle of life. There would be large number of identical genes, which minimizes the chances of mutation, and, in turn, evolution - the fundamental reason how living things naturally vary to the ever-changing environment. Life processes failing to do so might result in untimely extinction. Furthermore, cloning would eliminate the uniqueness that each o ne of us posses. Thus, leading to creation of genetically engineered groups of people for specific purposes and, chances are, that those individuals would be regarded as objects rather than people in the society in grand scale.

The Living Dead Essay -- The Return of the Living Dead Horror Films Es

The Living brain deadSince the beginning of film, people hasten been spellbound by horror movies. They seem to excite the viewer with emotions of fright, excitement and thrill. And since there devour been horror movies there have been monsters to bring fright to the viewers during and after the movie. A common monster that can be found in four-fold films is the zombie also know as the living dead. One of the greatest living dead directors and screenplay writers would have to be George A. Romero. From his famous trilogy of living dead movies his terminal installment, Day of the Dead, proved to the world that zombies can be just as scary as any other horror monsters. He was thought as the only horror director that could make a good horror picture with the living dead. Then in 1985, a director and screenplay writer by the name of Dan OBrian created the movie, The Return of the Living Dead, which regenerated the genre of the living dead. The Return of the Living Dead and Day of the Dead, both share a common field that the living dead will al shipway prevail over the living. The Return of the Living Dead begins with Freddy on his first day on the job at a medical supply ancestry. Freddy and a coworker unintentionally release a nerve gas from a secret U.S. military canister. Before they realize what they have done the dead in the shop start coming to life. Thinking the problem can be solved by disposing of the evidence in the store they ask a cremator to burn the bodies. When he agrees and the bodies are burned, unknowing to them the fumes from the smoke cause the gas to rain around the surrounding cemetery. Unfortunately a group of teenagers are partying in the cemetery when the dead start rising from their graves. Before anyone ... ...ach other in the wilderness. So again in indirect ways the living dead have triumphed over living by making them run away from everything they know, into a primitive life environment. Therefore throughout the c onsummate movie the living dead triumphed over the living. The theme that the living dead will always overcome the living is displayed throughout the movies The Return of the Living Dead and Day of the Dead. Both movies showed that this theme came in both direct and indirect contact from the living dead. Most importantly both of these movies created a creature that could not be contained by the living. This puts fright back into the viewer that if one of these stories became true we would have no way of stopping the living dead. So the next measure someone makes a joke about the dead coming to life remember that if it does happen this is no hope for mankind.

Two Themes of George Bernard Shaw’ s Plays “Arms and the Man”

Arms and the Man is one of George Bernard Shaws successfully written plays that suffer become predominant and globally renowned. Shaws play leads itself to cardinal themes that people can relate to, which ar the importance of struggle and the essentials to true love and marriage. These themes are interwoven, for Shaw believed that while war is evil and stupid, and marriage desirable and good, both had become wrapped in romantic illusions which led to disastrous wars and also to unhappy marriages. 1 The theme of war applies itself into the plot within the first few pages of the melodrama, when the Bulgarians are at war with the Serbs.Romance is portrayed by the humorous and ironic relationships of Raina, Sergius and Bluntschli. Unfortunately, delinquent to societys lack of comprehension and failing to learn from our past errors, we are destined to repeat the majority of them. An another(prenominal) perform of ignorance found in this play is the attitude of the Petkoffs towards their material advantages and their possessions of wealth, bringing them face-to-face superiority. Arms and the Man is as fresh and up-to-date today as when Shaw first produced his play in 1894. 2War is an unfortunate condition that exists when a group feels its vital interests are at stake and seeks to impose its beliefs or control on a rival group through the use of overt force. Shaw was a socialist and an ardent pacifist. 3 He did not agree to the idea of war, and he wrote closely it to warn us, future generations, not to commit the same crime. The romantic view of war (he held) is based on the idealistic notation that men fight because they are heroes, and that the soldier who takes the biggest risks wins the greatest glory and is the greatest hero.Raina had imagined war as an exciting sport after talking with Captain Bluntschli, one of the defeated, she now sees it as a dreadful reality. 5 Sergius, too, has learned something of the realities of war, and is so disgusted by th em that he has sent in his resignation, saying Soldiering is the cowards art of attacking pitilessly when you are strong, and keeping out of harms way when you are week. 6 This theme of war helps Shaws Arms and the Man to continue as a fresh and current play, as it was in 1894.The battle of Slivnica was remarkable mainly for its surprise ending wherein the Bulgarians defeated the invading Serbians much more by good luck than good management, and went to ally themselves with Austrian Hungary thereby bringing World War I one small step closer. 7 galore(postnominal) other wars have taken place since wherefore, and yet man has still to learn that war is not the answer. The romance in the play is portrayed by the humorous and ironic relationships of Raina, Sergius and Bluntschli. In Arms and the Man Raina Petkoff intends, at the time the play opens, to become the wife of Major Sergius Saranoff, who is then away fighting the Serbs. watchword has come home to Raina and her mother that S ergius has ridden bravely at the head of a victorious cavalry charge, and Raina rejoices because she can now believe that her affianced is just as handsome and noble as he looks That the world is really a glorious world for woman who can see its glory and men who can act its romance In the opening scene of the play, after adoring Sergius portrait, Raina goes to bed murmuring My hero My hero This is a romantic view of life, but then reality suddenly breaks in upon her.An enemy solider, Captain Bluntschli the chocolate-cream soldier, escaping from gunfire in the Bulgarian countryside, scales the balcony of a mountain estate and lands in the bedroom of a young woman whose father and fiance are fighting on the front. He is desperate through exhaustion and fear, and Raina sneers at him. Nevertheless, when the pursuers come to search the house, Raina hides the fugitive and denies having seen him. She also feeds him chocolates, they are his passion he carries them like all professional soldiers, he says into war instead of bullets.Bluntschli is Shaws affectionate parody of a Swiss pragmatist, level-headed and unemotional. It amuses Shaw to discombobulate him by placing him, initially, in a situation where his reasonableness cannot help him much. Raina no week hanker thinks of war as a romantic game, nor does she any longer think of marriage as the mating of a beautiful heroine and a ornamental and fickle Sergius. She takes as her husband the plain Bluntschli, whose common sense and sixsome hotels in Switzerland will give her stability and comfort. The realities of love and marriage become one of the most frequent themes in Shaws plays throughout the remainder of his long life. 9 The complexities of love and marriage has not changed much over the years. For example, love and relationships were just as obscure in 1894 as they are in 1998. This makes Shaws play recent and the issues it deals with are understandable. Shaw believed that it was foolish to act as thou gh the possession of wealth, or any other material advantages, is a sign of personal superiority.People may not any longer think it impressive to have an electric bell in the house, but there are countries straight off where families with television sets and motor cars feel just as stupidly proud as the Petkoffs did with their bell and library. 10 Many people world-wide today consider themselves supra others and look down on those with less materialistic possessions, as if they were inferior. Having more materialistic possessions and wealth does not necessarily mean it will bring you happiness, this is not the reality of life at all.As a mater of fact, those with less materialistic treasures tend to live a happier and peaceful life. This is because their efforts are not change state on wealth but rather on family and friends who support each other. Money and wealth can control a person to become penurious and require more. It is much better to live a life of harmony and peace, bl essed for what to have, than to live worrying about the things that you do not have. That is a lesson Shaw is essay to teach us. We should learn from the Petkoffs and acquire a better attitude towards life and its materialistic treasures. If history repeats itself, and the unexpected always happens, how incapable must Man be of learning from experience? George Bernard Shaw. Furthermore, Arms and the Man is as fresh and up-to-date today as when Shaw first produced his play in 1894. Shaws play leads itself to two themes that people can relate to, which are the importance of war and the essentials to true love and marriage. The theme of war applies itself into the plot within the first few pages of the play, when the Bulgarians are at war with the Serbs.Romance is portrayed by the humorous and ironic relationships of Raina, Sergius and Bluntschli. Shaw believed that it was foolish to act as though the possession of wealth, or any other material advantages, is a sign of personal super iority. Moreover, Arms and the Man is a successful play and will continue to prosper due to the nature of its themes, war and romance being contemporary with todays society. Perhaps Shaws best ability might have been his ability to attract attention to himself, his ideas, and his works. This ability never failed him.

History of Psycology Essay

Before psychology there was philosophy. Descartes was around during the end of the Renaissance and in the age of revolutionary developments in science. Born in 1596 to a French lawyer, Descartes could understand more than most. When he was in his late 20s, he resembled more of a scientist than a philosopher since he had studied physics, optics, geometry as well as physiology. The first to discover that lenses in ones eyes atomic number 18 inverted by removing an oxs eye, Descartes also believed in truth and was an active rationalist, meaning he believed the truth would emerge by careful use of reason and it became his modus operandi. This instruction to truth was also through the human capacity to reason. He created four rules he utilize to arrive at truth. He also was the best-known model of a dualist, giving way to accepting a clear partition between mind or soul and body. He believed that the body was like a well-oiled machine and the mind could have a direct influence on it. J ohn Locke followed Descartes in 1632. He wanted to take epistemology, the study of human association and obtaining it, to a more experimental found group of discipline. Locke spurned the caprice of innate ideas, only faculties. Some ideas appeared so early in life that they used to believe they were innate but Locke declared that all of our knowledge was derived from experiences. Locke stated that the mind was like a white sheet of paper, blank but fit to become something great.Experiences add to the paper by sorcerers and reflections. George Berkeley was some other philosopher born in 1685. His work on vision was the first example of how empiricist thinking could be utilize to the study of perception. Lastly there is David Hume. He built his knowledge around the base premise that all of our understanding is rooted in experience, or impressions vs.ideas.Impressions are basic sensations experienced daily such as feeling pain, seeing yellow or tasting saltiness. Ideas are faint copies of impressions but are not as vivid. Hume also offered terce laws of association resemblance, contiguity, and cause/effect. Resemblance meaning the look of one object can bring back memories or ideas of another item. Contiguity means intertwining two things together such as the smell of oranges and the west coast. The greatest of the laws is the law of cause/effect.If one idea causes another idea or memory, the cause reminds you of the effect i.e. burning your hand on the stove while making muffins. When seeing the scar, the memory of muffins will reappear. Hume also suggested that to conclude that A causes B, one must know 1. When A occurs, B must occur regularly, 2. A occurs before B, and 3. B doesnt occur without being preceded by A. In the 19th century, psychology shifted from being philosophically based to being more scientific. Scientists and physiologists tried to show the world the reasons behind psychology were in fact based on the senses and the nervous system. One example is the Bell-Magendie law. Both Sir Charles Bell and Francois Magendie both were studying the roots of the postierior and anterior roots of the spinal cord and their functions. Bell was ascribe with the law because his research was published earlier, though limited, and Bell did not conduct an experiment like Magendie did on puppies. They discovered that the posterior roots control sensation where there is movement still but no sensation. Magendie then severed the anterior root in another animal and the limb was flaccid and ineffectual to move though it still had sensation. To conclude, the science of psychology has always been a changing domain from philosophy to the sciences. It will continue to grow and develop as the world changes and shifts. Descartes started the ball rolling by studying optics and how to arrive at the truth with his four laws. Locke showed the world that it is nurture vs. nature that shapes a person. Hume gave us the three laws of association. In the 19 th century psychology developed to include sciences. All of these philosophers and scientists shaped the psychology field to what it is today.

English Should be Declared the Official Language Essay

In recent years, the Americas ability to resolve ethnic diversity and political unity has been ch all(prenominal)enged at new level. The influx of immigrants from Asia, Africa and Latin America has brought changes in the character of many natives and accelerated demands for politics services in their own dustups. The aspect of linguistic diversity has in fact sparked insecurity about landed estateal unity and fostered a wave designed to make incline the positive talking to in the get together States (Inhofe and Munoz 1).Entrenched in the politics of language and especially making position the official language in fall in States is the deeper contest of American identity and means of preserving it. Ensuring a common official language create and establish the foundations of tribeal unity, on top of enhancing ethnic harmony. Policymakers and nearly American citizens have responded to this issue in various steerings.Court decisions, administrative regulations and federal natu ral laws have always favored the ultimate use of other languages in public offices, just now most citizens have favored slope language as a valued symbol of American nationhood worthy being naturalized and defended for (Zehr 23). Pros of English as Official United States Language Although lawmakers in the United States have lingered on deciding on endowing English with a special sanctioned status, it was assumed that a common language would develop in America. To affirm this hypothetical assumption, linguistic researchers consistently found out that the typical pattern of language usage among the immigrants to America shifted from non-English in the first generation of immigrants to use of the many languages in their surrounding neighbors in the second generation and the reverted to English in the triad generation (Scholastic 1).This was because speaking English was the only way to cope up for the new immigrants to adequately adapt to the society they found in America, increase their earning potential, for students to take after in schools, and eventually enhance their future career options in the land of many opportunities. The immigrants and their descendants learned English not because the law forced them to referable to the agent that learning English was a precursor to helping them get ahead in America. The debate of making English the United States official language is founded on the believe that the stableness of the American institutions and determine heavily depended on cultural homogeneity. The Americas citizens and courts have sent clear message that stack should unite behind a common official language and especially English which has been grasped by the majority and help foster American values that instruct one another in that cultural diversity.By helping the immigrants learn the official language would ensure that the services from government institutions are accessible to all and by extension would enable save taxpayers money initially used to cater for those services of an interpreter (Gillespie 1). Looking at the bigger picture, bilingual systems resembling in education require special services which prove to need a good deal of money and more so create segregation on ethnic groups against the values endeavored to be achieved in the American dream (Inhofe and Munoz 1).Lets look at the issue in this perspective suppose an employer precious to train employees of different native languages what would he or she do? Having that common language is a major boost as bothone would endeavor to just be literate in it and break the barriers of language (Cincinnati 1). Training mountain in their native language narrows the perspective to ethnic level and would mean a lot of trainers-unnecessary expense of the company. On the issue of language rights, which are mostly demanded by ethnic minorities, they are symbolic affirmation of their continued attachment to their original burnishs. In the context of international are na, people have started thinking globally the revival of ethnic consciousness does not anchor well with postering that international standards and more limited the concern of national unity (Inhofe and Munoz 1). Maintaining the ethnic lines brings about unrest and polarization as experienced in most parts of the world.United States is the greatest nation on earth and ensuring preservation of English as the official language would be a great feat of achievement for it would ease out contrast in offices which occur because people cannot be understood or are discriminated simply because they cannot speak a certain language. Inhofe and Munoz ( 1) point out a Zogby outside(a) Poll established that eighty-five percent of the sampled expressed their support for making English as the language that should be used in all government operations.Surprisingly also, seventy-one percent of the Hispanics surveyed, were for the idea of making English as the official language in United States. This positivism has also been expressed in other polls and call for the implementation of bill that gives English the legal status as the official language and so at that place is no reason whatsoever to offer government services at extra be in foreign languages. In cordial feat the Pledge of Allegiance and the matter Anthem through English show the patriotism in bringing the nation together in the spirit of sharing the American Dream.Cons of English as Official United States Language The demographic and political changes that began in America in the 1960s opened an era of clash over language. It was the blacks who emphasized the values of ethnic distinctiveness and solidarity in the use of their native languages and other groups followed. Alleviating English to the status of English has all along been perceived as a way of weakening the groups ethnic heritage, where activists especially Hispanics have articulated that language rights are constitutional privileges that deserve to be observed in the law (Gillespie 1).This in fact advocated that the United States government should move beyond toleration minority languages in the private arena to promoting bilingual languages in its institutions. This has always remained as the biggest threat to ensuring that English is do legally the official language in the United States. According to Inhofe and Munoz (1) another reason that has been a draw back in ensuring English is legal recognized as the official language in America is because there are other languages that are also spoken by a considerable number of people like the Spanish.Spanish is said to be spoken by over forty million Hispanics in the United States at work, at homes and in their daily lives. Inhofe and Munoz (1) advocate that by virtue of making English as the official language and relieving the government role of assisting non-English speakers and this could speckle doom to those who cannot quickly learn English. It is agreed that people can learn English and money can be devoted to helping non-English speakers learn but the trick comes in passing a law that would magically expect people learn promptly may proof to be hard (Cincinnati 1).nonage activists have all along supported cultural maintenance programs that teach children subjects in English and their native language in their education. The concept celebrates the multicultural conceit of identity in America and in the process celebrates ethnic consciousness. The symbolic importance considerably undervalues the English language on the specter of accepting the bicultural approach, where the culture of a group is embedded in their language (Zehr 23).Cincinnati ( 1) argues that the United States has never declared an official language because of the drawbacks that are faced in trying to do so and many people have tried without much success. In 1780, a congress man John Adams proposed to the congress for English to be made the official language, but he received much criti cism where the proposal was deemed as threat to individual liberty and undemocratic. Over the years whenever the debate arose, there have been people on both sides (Scholastic 1). Only twenty-seven states have officially made English their official language others remaining in the dark.Others people are opposed to the stand of making English official language simply because their business of translation would be affected as learning English for Spanish people they can understand and translate the manuscripts themselves (Cincinnati 1). Scholastic (1) points out that the estimates according to a U. S. English Inc. , a group that is a proponent of declaring English as the United States official language, there are close to 322 languages spoken by the citizens in the country. Twenty-four of these languages are spoken almost in every state.Statistics has it that Wyoming has the fewest languages fifty-six in number while California State has the highest, two hundred and seven in total. C incinnati ( 1) strongly argues that because the U. S is a nation of immigrants as rightly proved by the numbers, declaring English as the official language would be impeachment of the individual rights for those incapable of speaking English, who on the other grant pay taxes and should be served their languages notwithstanding. Gillespie (1) reminds us that when the question of language comes up many argue that it is aimed at dividing as it has remained a hot button to touch. Many politicians argue that immigrants have been coming to America and have consequently contributed without holding back to the nation and eventually working to fulfill their dreams of better lives for their families and themselves. For this reason declaring English as an official language these immigrants would turn their backs on the American common dream. Conclusion The many reasons brought forth strongly propose that English should be made the official language of the United States. On the other hand, val id opposition on the issue also comes up, bearing weight which should be negated at policymakers peril.English as the official language has many benefits to offer to the American citizens and the national unity at large. Homogeneity in language would cut down unnecessary costs encountered in the education and in judicial courts not forgetting polarization of the ethnic groups overtly felt and seen around the world. Moreover, it would be a plus in enhancing stability of the American institutions. The pros override the cons and supporting English as official language in the U. S would bring more benefits than the demerits expressed.

Now the President Bush had all the authority and support to persuade Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait. On January16, after the Iraqi presidency failed to withdraw its military forces from Kuwait by the deadline ,President ordered Operation Desert Storm and Iraqi forces were defeated and Kuwait was liberated. by and by Iraqi Government agreed to observe and comply with all U.N.Resolut ion , a ceasefire was ordered .Operation Desert Storm helped to destroy greater part of Iraqs military machinery and Iraqs claim to Kuwait.During June 1993, President Clinton ordered U.S. air strikes at Iraqi intelligence service byequarters at Iraq which had instigated and fostered a conspiracy to assassinate cause U.S.President George Bush during his to Kuwait during April 14-16,1993.After the Persian Gulf War in 1991, the USA go along to engage economicalal as well as military conflict with Iraq. The main aim of the USA was to put an end to Saddam Husseins military regime in Iraq and to prevent Iraq becoming threat to international peace and U.S National interest in Middle East and to deny Saddam Hussein the opportunity to utilize Iraqi military to run through his political opponents among the Kurdish inhabitants of northern Iraq and among the Shiite Muslim marsh Arabs of Southern Iraq. The other main aim of US is to compel the Iraqi Government to honor its planetary obligat ions, including those relating to(1) The ban on the further development, productions and stockpiling of nuclear, biological, chemical and other weapons of mass destructions.(2) To call for the destruction of existing stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction.(3)Recognition of and respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political emancipation of Kuwait,(4) Compliance with the terms of the ceasefire agreement ending the Persian Gulf War.The main objective of the continuing military presence and activity of the USA and its allies in the Middle East the Southwest Asia / Northeast Africa / Persian Gulf region is to prevent the Iraq regime and military forces from jeopardizing international peace and US National interest in the region. The other main aim was to prevent Iraq from threatening the security and independence of neighboring countries such as Kuwait and Saudi Arabia and from endangering US regain and that of the other industrialized nations to the oil of the Mi ddle East, the region which has over 70% of the Globes known petroleum reserves.During early October , 1994, US decided to drawdown its troops in the middle east in a phased manner , Saddam Hussein ordered the movement of his troops to wards southward and headed in the direction of Kuwait. As a result, there was a significant Iraqi military build up along the Kuwait border. Saddam Hussein deed clearly show his capacity to threaten neighboring countries and imperil the industrialized Wests access to Middle Eastern petroleum. Saddam Hussein action also revealed virtually lack of trustworthiness and his determination to violate the terms of the ceasefire agreement ending the Persian Gulf War.Again, UN Security Council had passed a resolution on October, 15, 1994 condemning the Iraq Government for the deployment of troops along the Kuwait Border. Bill Clinton, who was then the President of USA, deployed US Reinforcements on the Kuwait border to Iraq to counter the Husseins troops. Be cause of the strong and find US response, Saddam Hussein backed down and withdrew all the troops from Kuwait border. Because of the defused environment, US also ordered the withdrawal of its troops from Kuwait.OPERATION DESERT STRIKE.In early 1996, Saddam Hussein began to initiate military actions which controvertd that his predisposition toward making mischief in the Middle East had not very abated. The Iraqi despot dispatched his military forces into the Kurdish region of Iraq, seeking to regain political control over Iraqi territory .Saddam Hussein military invaded the region of north of the 36th parallel ,captured Irbil and pursued and attacked Kurdish refugees .Bill Clinton responded to Iraqi aggression by initiating Operation Desert sweetheart. However Operation Desert Strike was not as vigorous as it might have been because US response was to take action affecting Iraqi military positions and matters far from the field of battle in Northern Iraq. In pitiable , US abando ned the Kurds and failed to live up to the obligation to protect and defend against Iraqi aggression over the region north of the 36th parallel , where thousands of members of groups opposed to Husseins rein were operating and functioning under the guidance of the US Central Intelligence Agency. The flat coat for the not taking stringent action during Iraqs aggression against Kurds in 1996 by Clinton was mainly due to forth coming Federal resources which due during November, 1996.US ELECTION -1996President Clinton however managed to keep the Iraq issue out of the 1996 elections to enhance his reelection chances. However, Saddam took it as US weakness and started to continue his endeavor to circumvent, erode the durability of USA. Saddam soon began a series of challenges to the system of UN Sanctions and audition impose on his regime to prevent if from developing, producing and stock piling weapons of mass destruction .Saddams continuous resistance to the UN weapon of mass destru ction Program and its implementation came to a peak in January, 1998 when he expelled the US members of UNSCOM, the UN Weapons Inspection team.OPERATION DESERT FOXFrom 1997 onwards, Saddam tried to obstruct the UN weapons inspection program in Iraq. He frequently protracted military confrontation with the USA and its allies. At one stage, he expelled the close to of the US members of the weapons inspection team and because of this action, UN Security Council threatened to reinstate economic sanction against Iraq and Saddam never took serious of the warning issued by UN Security Council. In protest, the United Nations recalled the other inspection team members. The non cooperation from Saddam resulted in American British military build up in the Persian Gulf. This had effect of locating of Saddam and it induced him to back down short while and he readmitted the weapons inspectors, including those from the USA. In November, 1997, Iraqi regime gave notice that it would not permit the U.N inspectors to enter and inspect sites at designated palaces and designated residences ECONOMIC SANCTIONIn January, 1998, Saddam Hussein again expelled the U.S. members of the U.N weapons inspection team. The UN again protested by withdrawing the other inspectors and due to this a standoff continued and tensions were heightened. The UN Security Council imposed economic sanctions on Iraq. Again, a US military build up in the Persian Gulf commenced. In February, 1998, U.N Secretary customary General Kofi Annan negotiated an agreement whereby the Iraqi regime allowed readmission of U.N inspectors and resumption of the weapons inspection program. In return for this concession, the Iraqi government was given assurance that the Security Council would consider lifting the economic sanctions. The UN Weapons inspectors team did not receive full support from Iraqi regime during this period as Iraq claimed that the Security Council had shown no signs of taking steps for the removal of sancti ons imposed .On October ,1998 Saddam again terminated the work of the UN Inspection team at Iraq. This has resulted again in building up of military presence by American British in the Persian Gulf. On November 5, 1998, United Nations recalled UN Inspection team assigned to Iraq.Again Saddam yielded and allowed the UN inspection team in Iraq. But this was short lived .Again on December .1998, the UN team once again left Iraq.UN report dated 15th December .1998 charged the Iraqi Government for non cooperation and denial of access to records and inspection sites and through clandestine movement of equipment and records from site to site.OPERATION DESERT FOX Based on the UN report. President Clinton decided to take military action against Iraq. The operation was named as Operation Desert Fox, a massive campaign of air strikes against key military and security targets in Iraq .Several targets were attacked in this operation including head quarters of Saddam Baath Party, barracks of the sad dams elite security guards, republic guard barracks and his daughters palace at Tikirt. The main goals of the Operation Desert Fox were (1) to degrade Saddam ability to make and use of weapons of mass destruction .(2) to diminish Saddam ability to wage war against his neighbors and (3) to demonstrate the consequences of flouting International obligations.President Clinton terminated Operation Desert Fox after three days as it had inflicted significant damage on Saddam WMD programs and his military and security infrastructure. and Iraqs missile programme had been set back by at least 12 months and its military might had been substantially damaged.President Clinton ordered at the end of December ,1998 to draw down the U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf .But it is to be noteworthy Operation Desert Box though successful but could not compel the Iraqi regime to accept and cooperate with the U.N.Weapons inspection program.GAME OF CHICKENThis encouraged Saddam Hussein to lick the dangero us game of Chicken with USA and its allies. Saddam Hussein continued to play hide and seek game with U.S.A , its Allies and with UN by defying the west and jeopardise its interests in the Middle East. He yielded temporarily when threatened with or subjected to western military attack. He reneged on the International commitments which he made in order to avoid or end a western military assault against his political regime and military / security forces. After the end of the operation Desert Fox , the U.S.A and its allies have engaged in a low level war with Iraq. The main aim of US to give protection to the Kurdish and Shiite minorities in Iraq from suppression and genocide from Saddam. The other aim is to replace Saddam region by another leader or group of leaders favourably disposed to US. In waging war with the Iraq , President Clinton has been acting in compliance with the reporting requirements of section 4 of the War powers Act of U.S.A. The President has been periodically r eporting to Congress on the Status of U.S hostilities with the Iraqi regime and on other matters relating to the hostilities.Bill Clinton pursued a polity of belligerence towards Iraq , imposing crippling economic sanctions , undertaking the most sustained bombing campaign after Vietnam war and making regime change in Iraq as official US Policy.US POLICIES UNDER BUSH REGIMEA secret blue print for US global domination reveals that President Bush and his cabinet were planning a premeditated attach on Iraq to secure regime change even before he took power in January 2001. A plan called Global pax Americana was drawn mainly to take control of the Persian Gulf region sans Saddam Hussein region while civil government was reestablished. It is to be noted that war was initiated on the main ground that Iraq was non cooperative in allowing inspection of weapons of mass destruction. However, in the aftermath of war, it became apparent that Saddam had no such weapons programme. umpteen an (prenominal) Americans including prominent members of the Congress, claim Bush and his administration lied or misled the country based on doctored intelligence reports. The Bush Administration also linked the usurpation of Iraq to the war on Terrorism, claiming that Hussein was giving safe heaven to and supporting terrorist groups. There were also accusation that Saddam was indirectly supported the September 11, 2001 attacks on America. It is to be noted that although the Bush administration strongly suggested ties at some level between Hussein and Al-Qaeda, it did not accuse Saddam of complicity in the specific events of 9/11 events.POST INVASION OF IRAQMilitary occupation was established and run by the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) Which later appointed and tending(p) limited powers to an Iraq interim Governing Council. Coalition and allied Iraqi forces have been fighting a stronger than expected militant Iraqi insurgency and hence ,the reconstruction of Iraq has been sl ow .In mid -2004, the end of the occupation was brought about and a new sovereign and independent Interim Government of Iraq assumed the full office and authority of the State. The CPA and the Governing Council were disbanded on June 28, 2004 and a new transitional constitution came into effect. Sovereignty was transferred to a Governing Council Iraqi interim Government led by Iyad Allawi as Iraqs first post-Saddam Prime Minister. But this Government can make laws only with the approval of CPA.The Iraqi interim Government was replaced as a result of elections which took place in January, 2005. A period of negotiations by the elected Iraqi National Assembly was followed which culminated on April 6,2005 with the selection of the leaders who soon head Iraq among them Prime Minister Ibrahim al Jaafari and President Jalal Talabani. The multinational forces still exercise considerable power in the Country and with the New Iraqi Army, conduct military operations against the Iraqi insurgen cy .The role of Iraqi government forces in providing security is increasing.CONTINUING INSURGENCYEven though, the Baath Party governing was disintegrated, elements of the Secret police and Saddam army began forming guerilla units and focused attacks around Mosul, Tikrit, Fallujah .These elements who called themselves freedom fighters began using ambush tactics, suicide bombings and improvised explosive devices, targeting coalition forces and damp points.Suicide bombers believed to be mainly disheartened Iraqi Sunnis, Syrians and Saudis tore through Iraq. Their targets were often Shia gatherings or civilian concentrations mainly of Shias,OPERATION METADORDuring early May, 2005, the U.S launched Operation Matador, an .assault in the ungoverned region of western Iraq. Its goal was the closing of suspected insurgent supply routes of volunteers and material from Syria .The US allies succeeded in recapturing the whole area and even fighting the insurgents all the way to the Syrian borde r , where they were blocked .PARTICIPATING NATIONS IN THE MULTI NATIONAL ARMY IN IRAQAs of September, 2005, there were 26 countries with military forces stationed in Iraq. These were Albania, Armenia, Australia , Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria ,Czech Republic , Denmark ,El Salvador , Estonia , Georgia , Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania , Macedonia ,Mongolia , Netherlands ,Norway, Poland ,Romania, Slovakia, South Korea, United Kingdom , United States, Fiji and Ukraine. Poland, the Netherlands, Norway, Bulgaria and Ukraine have announced plans to withdraw.CONCLUSIONThe Kerry campaign in Presidential election against George Bush charged that US is acting as neo-colonial power and claimed that US bungled the war due to incompetence , mismanagement and arrogance .Designed to advance US commercial and corporate interest abroad , military force was often used to break open markets that resisted diplomatic and economic pressures. The Carter Doctrine as it plough known , made it clear the United States would use military power in the Gulf to secure and maintain the oil resources needed to turn of the wheels of the Empire. This policy explains the US sale of heavy weaponry to Saddam Hussein in the early 1980s when war broke out between Iraq and Iran. US took many efforts to normalize relationship with Iraq then .Despite Saddams use of Chemical against Iran and Kurdish population in northern Iraq, the United States continued to back Iraq .Emboldened by these signs of support for his regime, Saddam invaded Kuwait in 1990.The first Bush administration however quickly came to view the invasion as a threat to US supremacy in the region and launched the first Gulf War.Sanctions were imposed by the UN at the behest of US in order to secure US control over Iraqs Oil. The United States did not care about the fact that the sanctions have apparently killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis by withholding necessary food supplies and health check supplies.Madeline Albright ,the US ambassador to UN ,when asked that more than 500,000 children had died because of a lack of adequate nutrition and medical care, replied I think this is a very hard choice ,but the price-we think-the price. The Americans gross ignorance of conditions in Iraq was shown by their miscalculation in relation to the Shiites in the South. They thought that the latter would rise up against Saddam Hussein and encounter the invaders with open arms. But none of this happenedNapoleon knew a lot about bayonets and found many uses for them, but there is one thing they can not be used for , as he pointed out You can not sit on bayonets. The Americans and British do not have a tangible base of support in Iraq. A long term guerrilla war waged with low-tech methods like sniping, ambushes and suicide bombings can have a scourge effect over a long period if it has the backing of the people and it will .Though the US is a super power, it is to be remembered that it was defeated by barefoot army in Vietnam. The Great Britain was once the land of rising sun has to vacate their colonies in all most all countries due to charge of the subjects of that nation. After Iraq , US is now concentrating how to destabilize Syria on the pretext of extending military aid to Baghdad and harboring escaping Baathist leaders ,but also of possessing weapons of mass destructions. Again US is also try to destabilize the Iran by accusing that it is under the way to add nuclear arsenals which is going to be great threat to world peace. The recite of causalities in the Iraqs war is alarming .US alone lost 2105 innocent Americans (soldiers) and Allies lost 201 and innocent Iraqis killed was around 30,420 . Who is going to be father or brother or care taker of the innocent family which lost their life in the war . To prove its mightiness, innocent lives have been lost and do the US or its allies are going to answer the cries and hues of foresaid the families who have los t their dear and near for the nation. Let alone history has to tell us what is Iraqs necessity and political independence in the near future.BIBLIOGRAPHY1.Public Opinion and American Foreign Policy- by Ole R.Holsti.2.The Dynamics of Coercion American Foreign Policy and the limits of the Military Might-by Daniel Byman , Matthew C.Waxman.3.The Iraq war and its consequences Thoughts of Nobel Peace Laureates and Eminent scholars.- edited by Irwin Abrams, Wang -Gung Wu.4.
